Apple has restricted the internal use of generative AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft-owned GitHub’s Copilot in a bid to protect its confidential data from ending up with competitors, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. Although Apple is developing its own generative AI models, it is being cautious in the race to build these tools, citing concerns that internal tools trained on user data could end up being used by developers outside the company. Other organizations that have restricted their staff from accessing ChatGPT included Bank of America, Citi, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan, Walmart, and telecom giant Verizon.
What does it mean?
- OpenAI's ChatGPT: A generative AI tool developed by OpenAI that uses a large language model to generate human-like responses based on the input given.
- GitHub's Copilot: A generative AI tool developed by Microsoft's GitHub that can suggest lines of code to software developers to help them write code more efficiently.
- Generative AI models: A category of AI models that are designed to generate new content based on the data they are trained on. This can include text, images, videos, and more.
- Equity or debt securities: Financial instruments that represent ownership in a company (equity) or a loan that must be repaid with interest (debt).
