The Getty lawsuit against Stability AI is proceeding to trial in the UK
December 4 2023
A UK court has allowed Getty Images’ lawsuit against Stability AI, the creators of Stable Diffusion, to proceed to trial, supporting the claim that Getty’s copyrighted images may have been used to train the AI model without permission. The Business and Property Courts ruled despite Stability AI’s argument that the case was irrelevant to UK jurisdiction, as the AI’s development and training involved no UK-based individuals and utilized US cloud services. Justice Joanna Smith highlighted potential inaccuracy or incompleteness in Stability AI’s evidence, referencing CEO Emad Mostaque’s statements about facilitating UK residency for Russian and Ukrainian developers. The Verge is seeking comment from Stability AI, which also faces a similar lawsuit in the US.
